At the end of next month I am spending about a week in Chicago. I am thinking of staying at the J W Marriott on Adams Street. I like the proximity to the architecture center, the art museum and the Field Museum, all in walking distant. What are your thoughts about safety and convenience?
Also any sights to recommend? Restaurants? Kingston Mines or Rosas's?Chicago hotel advice?
The Marriott is a good choice for a 1st class stay. Chicago has many such hotels. This one is in the financial area of the Loop not far from the Willis Tower. Do not stay at the Congress Hotel. It is a scab haven:

More of an adult attraction is the John Hancock Bldg with a great restaurant and jazz lounge occupying the entire floor above the clouds at times. You know about Trump. He has a tower here that recently opened. You can eat above the streets there too.
Surrounding the Art Institute is Grant Park and Millenium Park. Enjoy lunch in the park and check out Cloud Gate and other sculptures in the parks and in Loop.
Kingston Mines was closed in Jan because of rat feces falling from the ceiling. Presumably that has been addressed as the mixed reviews below are recent:

Chicago has about 50 museums. There are other well recognized art museums here too:

Interested in architecture? There are several tour possibilities that will take you to unique structure and "first of a kind" buildings:

That area will be pretty quite at night, and it should be safe. In general you will run into some homeless guys looking for money, but they usually aren't pushy. This is pretty typical of most touristy areas of any city though. I personally like to stay farther north by the river, because more of the shops and restaurants are in that area, which is still an easy walk to the Art Institute and CAF, and then just cab it to the Field Museum or take a trolley.
As for other sites I would just hang out in Millenium Park for a while, take a river or lake boat tour, do the sky deck at the Sear (Willis) Tower, and check out a show (Second City or Million Dollar Quartet).
Lastly is the food. I like Harry Caray's, Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder, Lawry's, Hannah's Bretzel (not pretzel), Molly's Cupcakes, Berghoff's (I'm German), and Ruth's Chris.
