GoodyWhat to do in Chicago in February?!?
Welcome in advance to Chicago! I am pleased to see a young lady so excited to see our fair city. Since you are going to be at your Aunt's home near Navy Pier you will have easy access to a lot of tourist activities. I hope you get at least one warm (by Chicago winter standards) to stroll along the pier and watch the water. When partially iced over or snowy it is beautiful.
Here are my tips as the mother of six:
1) Have fun but be safe! Chicago is a big city with all that goes along with that. It is a nice city and most of the people are nice but as with any bigger city stay alert and don't travel by yourself. Watch your purse or backpack.
2) Dress in layers. It will most likely be quite cold outside but we keep our buildings and museums pretty warm. Nothing ruins a fun day like being too cold or too hot so dress in layers and peel off or put on as needed.
3) Definitely see the Sears Tower and/or Hancock Observatory. If you happen to be there around lunch time, I recommend the Signature Room in the Hancock. You can get lunch buffet for around $15 and enjoy the great views at the same time. Nice to sit and look instead of just walking around glass windows.
4) Art Institute - fabulous collection of art with traveling exhibits. Free evening is Thursday from 5-8 PM. Make sure to see the collection of Turner sketches and the wonderful Impressionist Wing.
5) ChinaTown - Make sure to take an adult. See the Nine Dragon Wall, Chinatown Gate and Square and the Chinese American Museum.
6) Greek Town - For some great places to eat, check out the Greek Town neighborhood. A variety of prices and ambiance levels are available but the food is categorically wonderful.
7) Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain - Yes, I know it is winter and will probably be snowy. It is beautiful just the same.
8) While you are in the Grant Part area, stop in at Eleven City Diner for a burger or sandwich and shake. Great old-school deli with super large portions and bustling atmosphere no matter the time of day.
9) Brookfield Zoo
10) Magnificent Mile shops (just to say been there, done that)
11) Science and Industry Museum - Don't miss the dollhouse exhibit
12) Rainforest Cafe, ESPN Zone or
13) Superdawg - Chicago style hotdogs and the best shakes around! Enough said.
14) Millennium Park
15) Field Museum
Another must is Chicago-style pizza. Most everyone likes Lou Malnatti's or Giordanos. I prefer the original Ginos Pizza where you used to be able to carve on the wall. I guess the wall ran out of room but it is entertaining to sit in the booths and read what everyone carved on previous visits.
Have fun! What to do in Chicago in February?!?
Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum of Natural History, and Museum of Science and Industry are all must see places. Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee, and Gander Mountain are great
fishing and hunting shops. Lou Mitchell's, The Berghoff, are great restaurants. For a great polish sausage sandwich, Jim's, or the Express Grill at Roosevelt and Union Ave. Super Dawg at Milwaukee and Devon for a great Chicago style hot dog. Mr. Beef on Orleans for the best Italian
Beef sandwich.Czech Plaza in Berwyn for a great Bohemian meal. Deeter's in Woodstock is a great German restaurant. Lou Malnati's for pizza. Check out the Observation Deck in Willis (Sears)
tower, ice skate at Millenium Park, shop or just walk The Magnificent Mile.
