What do you think about wearing Hunter Orange while you are Deer Hunting?

In California, and most of the West, you don't have to wear Hunter Orange. It is optional.

I normally hunt in the most dangerous National Forest in America, the Angeles Forest right behind Los Angeles. It is one of the few National Forests that's more dangerous than a ghetto. Weirdos come up here to rape/murder/rob.

http://outsideonline.com/outside/magazin鈥?/a>

Secondly, although you CAN hunt up here, few people DO. It's a true wilderness.

http://www.rwongphoto.com/RW1331_web.jpg

10,000 foot peaks, Bear, Mountain Lion, Bighorn Sheep, Deer. But hunters are so rare, that if I walk by the side of the road with a rifle, all the commuters on Angeles Crest Highway pull out their cell phones and report a terrorist. Most people in the Forest are commuting between Palmdale/Lancaster and Los Angeles.

For this reason, I don't want to be noticed. I don't want the killers/murderers who dump bodies in the forest to notice me. And I don't want the non hunters to notice me. So I don't wear Hunter Orange. What do you think about wearing Hunter Orange while you are Deer Hunting?
I may have the wrong outlook on this, but when hunting you have a gun in your hand. That makes you more or less the equal of anyone else that walks this earth.

How did the quote from Samuel Colt go? "God created man, but Samuel Colt made them equal" I wouldn't worry about anyone seeing me. Go hunting, wear what you wish and don't worry about a thing.

I learned something a long time ago. Never mess with someone that is scared of you. He'll kill you.And you're scared.
I think it's a good idea. It allows other hunters to see you. Especially during rifle season. With rifle rounds being high energy, they CAN overpenetrate and hit whatever or whomever is on the other side. A hunter should know what is behind the target. If you see orange, that means other hunters and so it reduces the likelihood of an accident.

It's mandatory in Wisconsin to wear 50% Blaze Orange (no camo orange either). There were no reported accidents this year either. What do you think about wearing Hunter Orange while you are Deer Hunting?
in indiana it is not opitional, with good reason, it makes it safer for the hunter during the hunting season, but it is more common for multiple hunters to be on the same acre of land, if you dont feel like wearing it, i would at least recoment getting a large piece of cloth that was orange so you could mark where you where at if you absolutely needed to
Im not a hunter, but there have been times I have went hiking during camping season; and I wear hunter orange when I know something is in season
It's safer to wear it than not, especially if you're hunting an area that is known to have others hunting in proximity or with a group.

Dumb questions Joke.?

Tolerance is the virtue of a man without convictions.

- G. K. Chesterton

If we are totally balanced in everything we do than we don’t have our own opinions. We can't choose a side if we are always worried about others opinions.

Krakauer demonstrates his positive bias towards Chris though several writing strategies.

He uses literary conventions when he quotes McCandless’ diary. He uses word choice to show his favor towards Chris by using positive words. He uses syntax to show the connection between him and Chris. “Like McCandless, figures of male authority aroused in me a confusing medley of corked fury and hunger to please” (Krakauer 134). This is opinion and therefore subject to bias. “My convictions should be apparent soon enough…” (Krakauer I). He warns of his own bias. He organizes the story so that we see the end and then the journey is more important to us. He uses formal presentation to present characters in the story with accuracy. He builds his authority by backing research and telling of his personal experiences.

Often it is less taxing to gather an opinion from a dialogue than a treatise. With both beliefs presented one can weigh the two ideals against each other and gain perspective. Krakauer uses every available chance to sympathize and rationalize Chris’ choices. Krakauer considers himself similar to Chris; to some this would jeopardize his integrity and to others it would simply back his arguments with experience. In reality it can do both or neither or one or the other. I cannot agree that he is attempting to indoctrinate anyone because he informs us of his bias. At the same time I cannot agree that he isn’t in some sense trying to validate his own opinions even more by stating this. “I won’t claim to be an impartial biographer. McCandless’s strange tale struck a personal note that made a dispassionate rendering impossible” (Krakauer I). This builds his authority. Yet at the same time it weakens his factual basis in a sense. “…I interrupt McCandless’s story with fragments of a narrative drawn from my own youth” (Krakauer I). By relating his own youth to McCandless’s he is trying to make people understand Chris.

One’s likes or dislikes can vary but with matters of fact there is no interpretation. There are absolute truths and personal truths in life. Krakauer manipulated the facts, in themselves true, and added subtle inflections to present his feelings. As I just used “manipulated”, a word seen as negative to illustrate Krakauer’s bias. The words that are chosen have an affect on the message the author is trying to portray. When Krakauer writes of the potato and sweet pea seeds he slants every word to fit his opinion. “Although a slightly smaller plant, wild sweet pea looks so much like wild potato that even expert botanists sometimes have trouble telling the species apart” (Krakauer 191). Was Chris arrogant? Or did he make a small mistake that even some experts do? Krakauer doesn’t leave too much room for debate in his conclusion. The use of the word “expert”, botanists make Chris’ mistake seem innocent. The truth is that nobody really knows for sure. One can only speculate.

Krakauer presents Chris’ story with a genre of adventure. This sheds positive light on McCandless’s journey and proves Krakauer’s bias. Along with his word choice and authority this makes it difficult to not see some bias. Ultimately it is up to the reader to decide what to believe. This becomes difficult when Krakauer’s view is so accessible. This forces readers to sift through to find what they consider the truth. He does present some opposing views and accounts yet they seem to have been picked for a reason. “Warning that it was 1:00 A.M. and he was well into a bottle of Seagram’s, Jans let fly...” (Krakauer 71). This in regard to one of the letters he received about his article from Outside magazine. Jans was drunk while he wrote the letter. I don’t know if the ones he picked were the best out of what he had to work with, but assuming that there were some sober writers I think he used this to build his authority, furthering his credibility. “The author describes a man who has given away a small fortune, forsaken a loving family, abandoned his car, watch and map and burned the last of his money before traipsing off into the ‘wilderness’ west of Healy” (qtd. in Krakauer 71). This quote goes without elaboration so again it is left to the reader to decide.

In life there are personal truths often called opinions and absolute truths often called facts. Sometimes people have facts wrong, or confuse fact and opinion because they believe it so strongly. To say that Krakauer is bias is to say he has opinion in a negative way. He used facts to attempt to prove his opinions. Sometimes opinions are facts and sometimes facts are opinions depending on how people see them. Opinions can be personal facts and facts can be personal opinions. Krakauer warned of his ‘bias’ so that the readers could sift through and forge their own path. Also there is something that I value highly called the Constitution which guarantees freedom of speech.Anyone wanna edit my paper?

as for the things on the boots called snake guards by most ppl....

Have you ever been around a zorse?

They're so pretty. I learned of zorses in Outside magazine and am curious to know more.

For those who haven't seen one of these beauties, below is an image of a zorse:

http://www.t-bar.org/animals/horses/zeld鈥?/a>Have you ever been around a zorse?
I'm an animal lover, and came across this animal sanctuary, Noah's Lost Ark in Ohio. I've never been there but plan to go...someday! They have a zorse. I'd never heard of one before this one. (First link, scroll down about half way and there's KHIRA. Talks a little about how they came to be.)
Zelda is pretty, but she'll never make a good pet. Go back and read her behavior profile...she can't stand being cooped up, and animals like that are seldom amenable to petting, let alone riding. If you'll note, they didn't answer the question about that very topic - riding. I suspect she'd behave the way most Zebras do when attempts are made to ride them - she'll bite and kick.

Y'wanna unusual animal to ride, go for an Onager.Have you ever been around a zorse?
Never heard of them. Wow. Didn't think it was possible. Other sites caution that zorses are usually more zebras than horses in temper usually, which means not socialised, wild, and not accepting rider or bridle.

    Here is another one :

    http://www.sportpony.com/Zorse.htm
The only zorse i know about is the one that trains using Pat Parelli's training methods and i've seen him ridden without a bridle. They do take intensive socialization to make them tolerate people. These folks seem to be doing the most with breeding zorses, zonies and zonkeys. They should be someone you're talking to and see if they're right for you.

    www.spotsnstripes.com
Yes, I even remember an old song we used to sing

A zorse is a zorse of course of course

And no one can talk to a zorse of course

Unless of course the zorse is the famous Mr Ed.

Is the movie "Into the Wild" accurate.?

I just watched the movie "Into the Wild". I had read the original account by JON KRAKAUER in Outside Magazine and the movie didn't seem at all the same. My memory isn't very good so I have to ask the question: Is the movie an accurate account? Is the movie "Into the Wild" accurate.?
I think it is. I read the book a few months ago and then watched the movie. I think so.

and I love Kristen Stewart. so I was excited to see it anyway haha
I don't think so. I think it was a way to glorify a young man's dumb idea to venture into the wilderness unprepared. Many people have died before him this way, and after him as well.

Don't get me wrong, the movie was wonderful, but I doubt it was entirely accurate. It would be great if it was, if all those people whose lives he had touched actually came forward, but I doubt it.Is the movie "Into the Wild" accurate.?
i believe i read somewhere it is as accurate as it could be, meaning because he used a fake name and traveled around by himself so much there is really no way of knowing what really went on. i think the people he met along the way are mostly accurate. they got a lot of info from the journal he kept also.
In order to understand the movie better u have to read the book. I believe its pretty accurate to the real events that happened

Do you want to know why pit bull owners so love and defend the breed?

This story is from the Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier by Jacqueline O'Neil. Weela was also featured in the October, 1996 Outside magazine as an example of the kind of dog one would like to have in a life-threatening situation.

Gary Watkins, eleven years old, was absorbed in chasing lizards when Weela, the family Pit Bull, plowed into him with a body slam that sent him sprawling. Gary's mother, Lori, saw the whole incident and remembers being surprised at first, because Weela always played kindly with children. But her surprise quickly turned to horror when she saw a rattlesnake sink its fangs into Weela's face. Somehow Weela had sensed the snake's presence from across the yard and rushed to push Gary out of strinking range.

Luckily for thirty people, twenty-nine dogs, thirteen horses and a cat, Weela recovered from the snake's venom. Luckily, because that's how many lives she saved a few years later. For her heroism, Weela was named Ken-L Ration's Dog Hero of the Year inDo you want to know why pit bull owners so love and defend the breed?
My dog, Cheyenne, and I walk into a room at the nursing home we visit each month. In the bed, I see a curled up figure barely visible beneath the thin cotton blanket. As I walk around the bed to face the "patient", my eyes meet those of a white haired, frail little woman. In them, there seems to be no expression, no recognition, no emotion. Cheyenne slowly places her paws on the edge of the bed bringing her golden colored head and tender brown eyes into view. The woman's gaze drifts from me to Cheyenne, and I watch as the transformation occurs. A spark of life comes into her eyes, the corners of her mouth turn up ever so slightly and the knees which were tightly pulled to her chest begin to relax and unfold.

The value of animals in promoting healing and growth has become increasingly recognized among professional care providers, clinical practitioners, and educators. Today, trained and certified animal/handler teams are used in medical, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and special education facilities throughout the world to provide a medium for assisting individual where traditional methods fall short.

What makes For Pits' Sake鈩?Animal-Assisted-Therapy unique is that the real work is done by animals, not humans. Time and again, our four-footed "therapists" have elicited nearly miraculous responses from deeply troubled or abused children, physically traumatized hospital patients, and even those who are terminally ill. We have seen a child use a hand that was partially paralyzed from illness strive hard and succeed in stroking our dog, Dakota's, back. On another occasion, we have seen one of our dogs curled up contently in the arms of a man wha had recently had a stroke and was very depressed. Since touch is a powerful sense and speech was unnecessary, the man smiled as he stroked Cheyenne's fur. The nurse told us she had never seen this man smile.

Participating facilities feel the program is a critical part of their total therapy. The consistent, regular visits from both humans and animals achieve lower heart rates, calm disturbed children, get uncommunicative people to convers and increase an ill person's chances for survival. Nursing home patients respond more to visitors when they are accompanied by pets and even physically aggressive patients become more tolerant of others when an animal is present. Convalescing residents, victims of Alzheimer's disease and chronically ill patients look to the visits from For Pits' Sake鈩?volunteers and our companions to dispel loneliness, focus attention on life and bring hope in the midst of their recovery.

    Here is another great story
They are warm, loving, sweet, loyal, funny, easy to get along with and they're a great friend.Do you want to know why pit bull owners so love and defend the breed?
I have never owned a pit bull, but I am fully in support of the breed. They are great courageous loving dogs.
well most people think pit bulls are ugly and so how would you feel.. just looking at them and someone throws dirt on them saying they are ugly. wouldnt you defend them?
pit bulls rock and they are NOT agressive unless u train them to be and i have 3 of them and i think my town is putting a ban on pitbulls i love these dogs.
I don't have a Pit - more of a smaller doggie person...have 2 doxies... but I think that rather than the dog...it's more the owner....it's a few owners that are giving the breed a bad name....it's quite sad really. I do realize that the breed itself is more aggresive genetically but alot of it has to do with the way that it was raised....that's a sad story but Weela's a true hero.... :)
Well, it is in the nature of dogs to defend their territory and to defend their people - dogs like and need to belong to a group and they like and need a job to do. There are many, many examples in the news of dogs who have saved kids, homes, owners from one thing or another.

There are also many examples in the news of pit bulls going bonkers and chewing up the kids and whatnot.

The way I look at it, these bad dogs were never domesticated properly by their owners and their social environment, and also their owners in all likelihood unconsciously trained their dogs to be covertly aggressive - many of the people who get them are aggressive-fearful bully types themselves.

It is not that pit bulls are the only dogs that get mis-trained either - many people think they'd like to have a dog, but they just don't do animal training and bonding and so on, and their dogs end up with all kinds of quirks and flukes.
I have had 2 Pit Bulls and I have to say, they are one of the most loving, caring, cuddling, warm animals I have ever met. I feel so sorry for them because people believe that they are nasty and vicious creatures, but they aren't. People make them that way and its disgusting.

That story right there proves that they aren't all horrible. Treat them nice and they'll be 3 times nicer back to you.
Thank you so much for posting this and for posting the link. I have a Pittie who was a rescue that I got at barely three weeks old. She is so gentle and sweet around kids. I have no doubt that she would give her life in an instant if she thought she could save someone. Thanks for the good side of the news. I am horrified by the trend to ban specified breeds with Pit Bulls at the top of the list.
U totally rock!!!!!!! I absolutely adore pitbulls and I love my pitbulls 2 death. I think nobody has a happy life until they fall in love with a pitty :) It's people like u that make me smile and realize that their really r people out there that truly understand the breed! There is no such thing as a bad breed just bad breeding! Pitbulls will do the very best at whatever u ask them 2 do---Be the best companion, they will be the very best that they can be!!! THANK U--- KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

  • How to find what Ad Agency has the "Parks Canada" account (advertising in Outside magazine)?

Outside magazine has beautiful advertisements for "Parks Canada" and I am trying to figure out who owns that account.

I am a professional photographer, and my work is very similar to what I saw in the ad. I know if I can contact the right person, they would be interested.

Aside from just this account, I am curious how I could find this information. I have gone so far as to sift through the Canadian budget, but I am stuck. How to find what Ad Agency has the "Parks Canada" account (advertising in Outside magazine)?
there are three ways to approach this

    1) you can contact The Department of Tourism Marketing Dept. who look after all the advertising for Parks Canada. they can either consider your work directly or they will be able to tell you who handles their advertising.

    2) You can contact the advertising dept or sales dept of Outside Magazine and ask them about the company that submitted the advertisement

    3) you can contact Outside magazine and see if they would like to use any of your photos in their publications.

    Passports....?

I'm planning a cruise on Royal Caribbean's Navigator to Cozumel and Belize City for Jan. 2008. I called RCCL last week and they told me that a passport would not be required until June 2008 but I called Orbitz today to see what they would say, and the lady told me I WOULD need one for January. I've been on the U.S. Dept. of State website and this is what it says:

    JANUARY 31, 2008

U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver鈥檚 license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

I'm so confused!! I'm planning on applying for my passport in the next week or so because of the confusion, but in case it doesn't get here on time, I want to know that I will still be able to go on the cruise! When I apply should I go ahead and have it expedited?

Thanks for any info anyone can give!

    RobinPassports....?
I just returned from an NCL Norwegian Pearl cruise to Cozumel, and Grand Cayman. As I went through customs to come home, the agent told me that effective January 1st, birth certificates would no longer be accepted. I already new that from my research prior to going on the cruise, but he made it very clear to repeat it! Have a wonderful time!
You need a passport to travel to Belize - US Citizens could travel only to the Caribbean islands, Canada and Mexico without a passport -- Belize is in Central America.

Since Belize is not covered by the new regulations -- visitors to Belize and Roatan and Panama have always needed a passport to travel there -- the section from the State Department regulations does not apply. If your cruise had an eastern Caribbean itinerary, you would not need a passport for ocean travel in January. The western Caribbean itinerary you chose stops at ports beyond the Caribbean.

Passport applications have been backed-up and delayed recently in excess of 3 months. Applications have slowed down and the government is catching up, but to be sure you receive your passport before you depart, go for the expedited service or use a private passport service.

    Happy cruising.Passports....?
You just need to keep reading a little bit FURTHUR on that state dep't webpage to see that it says the requirement for passports for LAND and SEA travel will not start until at least SUMMER 2008. However, SOME cruise lines do require passengers to have passports even tho the law does not. So it is wise to check with the cruise line. That idiot at Orbitz is misinformed, as many people are, yet answers people like she knows what she is talking about. Over a month ago, the NEW info was put on the state dep't website. See site below and read the top half of the page thoroughly and carefull. Congress has passed a bill that BY JUne of 2009 the passport requirements MUST be put into effect. Could happen as soon as June 2008...but not before. Good idea to go ahead and get a passport before the next grand rush starts, which it will!
My boyfriend and I are also going on a cruise in January to the southern caribbean. We went to the post office 2 days ago and applied for our passports. If you have money, you can expedite it and pay the extra $60. We asked the postman that worked there how long it would take and he said that we should have it in 2 weeks! amazing! Hope this helps
    Get one.

It will be mandatory soon enough I have traveled with passport for yeasrs on cruises and the passport makes it much easier for identification.

Border security ask less questions and tend to put you through faster. Also the cruise ship holds your passport and while you visit, they do random checks on board looking at the passports.

    http://www.royalcaribbean.com/beforeyoub鈥?/a>

This is the RCCL web page that describes it in detail.

If you are going in Jan of 2008 you will only need ID that he state, for now. In the summer of 2008 a passport will be mandatory.

Have fun. We are going again in March on RCCL.

    We just love them.
better safe than sorry....apply for your passport now. i applied the Thursday before Labor Day weekend and was told it would take up to 3 months. it took pretty much only 3 weeks to the day. no need to pay for it to be expedited.

Navigator of the Seas: points to person who answers ALL questions?

I am going on a cruise to cozumel and belize city in 2 weeks and its through the navigator of the seas (rccl) i have been on a cruise before, but on NCL's Jewel, which is freestyling, and i was wondering:

1)what the difference is between the formal/set dinners and freestyling.. also

    2) how is "teen scene"? do many come in march, if so do they choose to go to the teen club?

    3) ports of call and excursions booked-dolphin greeting (CZL), snorkel (BEL)

    4) Spa/pool area

    5) ATTIRE%26lt; ATTIRE%26lt;ATTIRE: does a 17 yearold wear sundresses the whole time (for dinners) and then the cocktail dress for formal night??

i will give 10 points to the person who can best answer ALL 5 of my questionsNavigator of the Seas: points to person who answers ALL questions?
    1. Free style eating is any restaurant at any time. You just have to make reservations. This style is only found on NCL. Royal Carribean has assigned dining. You will dine at the same time each night with the same people. However if you do not want to dine in the dining room there is always a buffett, and the food on Royal Caribbean is wonderful even at the buffett. The buffett has more than 1 type of food. There is asian, italian, mexican etc.

    2. I think March is school break, if that is the case there will be plenty of teens there. yes there is a teens club it is optional. There is a teen lounge area for dancing and mingling.

    3. Belize is great for snorkling, dolphin greeting is also good. Cozumel is also good for snorkling. I don't know what other ports you are calling upon.

4.Large pool area with two or four spas. Buffett is only steps away so you can take your lunch there.

    5. You can wear any casual attire for dinner but no jeans, shorts, sandles or tank tops for guys. Formal night you can wear a really nice dress. Doesn't necessarily have to be a cocktail dress. Just look really nice!

You will have a great time on this ship. You will even enjoy the shows. Entertainment is geared for all ages.

Have fun!Navigator of the Seas: points to person who answers ALL questions?
I have been on many NCL AND Royal Caribbean cruises among my almost 20 cruises. So I can tell you the differences.

On NCL, as you know, you have the freestyle dinner dining where you go to dinner any time after about 6:00 PM in the main dining room. Or, you make a reservation for one of the specialty restaurants. Or, you just go eat in the buffet or one of the other places the ship might have for you to get food. Or you order room service. The freestyle cruises have an informal dress with many people even dressing informal on formal nights. When you go to dinner you almost always get a different table and wait staff each day.

On Royal Caribbean cruises the process is almost the same. The main differences are (1) you must pick a dinner seating time (usually 6:00 PM or 8:30 PM); (2) you have the same table, table mates and wait staff for the whole cruise; and (3) more people generally dress up on formal nights. Just like on NCL you can (1) reserve dinner in a specialty restaurant (RC ships generally do not have as many specialty restaurants as NCL ships); (2) go to the buffet (which is called the Windjammer Cafe); (3) go to one of the other eating places, or order the free room service. The food and menu selections on RC are as good, if not better, than the food on NCL. One thing I like about the RC dinner menu is if you do not like any of the special for the day the RC menu has standing alternative selection (grilled chicken, grilled salmon or steak) that you can order instead any and every day.

I have not sailed on the Navigator but I have sailed on two of its twins sister Voyager Class ships which are identical, the Adventure and the Mariner of the Seas. So I am familiar with what is on board the ship.

First of all you should click on this link to a virtual view and tour of the Voyager class ships:

    http://www.royalcaribbean.com/multimedia鈥?/a>

It will help you see and understand some of what is on board and where it is.

At the front of the ship on one of deck 11 there is a full service gymnasium will all types of exercise equipment. Then there is a covered pool area next to that that has a pool and two hot tubs. Then you go further back and step outside and there are two pools and 4 hot tubs with lounge chairs and bar service. Then toward the back of the ship on deck 12 is the kids area called Adventure Ocean, the Video Arcade, the Teen Disco, then on deck 13 is the Rock Climbing wall, the basketball court, the in-line roller skating track, a mini-golf course, and Johnny Rockets. So if you like these type activities the back of the ship up top is the place to go.

When you first board the ship the place to go to get something to eat (lunch will be ready) is the Windjammer Cafe which is on deck 11.

The ship has a pedestrian mall down its center and there is a place to shop and get food 24/7, including hot pizza.

The ship also has an internet cafe on deck 8, and a library on deck 9. The ice skating rink is on deck 3 in the center of the ship, and there is also a place where you can record yourself doing karaoke. There will be a free ice show in that room that you should not miss.

So the ship has a lot for your to do and see. There is no way to be positive as to how many teens will be on board when you cruise. Anything that I tell you would be purely a guess.

The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM. So take:

    - swim wear, (a couple)

    - shorts, jeans, "T" shirts, tank tops,

    - sun glasses and sun screen, lotions,

    - your snorkel equipment if you have it,

    - a book if you are a reader,

    - your music player,

    - sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym,

    - good walking shoes,

    - your camera,

    - other personal toiletries.

Your cabin will have towels and soap provided, including pool towels. It will also have a generic hair shampoo so you do not need to bring that unless you like a specific brand. They do not provide tooth paste, mouth wash or lotions. They DO provide a hair dryer.

After 6:00 PM they request that you wear "sports or resort casual" attire. That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, (like a bank employee), shirt with a collar, slacks, skirt, blouse, etc. You can still wear shorts and swim wear in the pools and spas but not in public areas like dining rooms and restaurants, show rooms, bars, casino, etc. You can wear jeans and sandals in the evening but not in the main dining room. You can wear them in the buffet and walking around ship, in the lounge, show room, casino. Don't over pack , take clothes that you can mix and match tops and bottoms and plan to wear each piece twice.

Your cruise will have a formal night and on RC ships more people dress up than on NCL cruises. BUT, its up to you as to what you wear. You will be OK as long as you are at least sports/resort casual after 6:00 PM each day.

    Royal Caribbean versus Carnival?

I sailed on the Grandeur of the Seas (a RCCL ship). The ship had every cabin full, andit never seemed to be crowded, and in fact, you would see people you met all the time. I am booking a cruise for February 2010, presidents week. I am thinking about the Liberty cruise which departs on Feb. 14 from Miami. I was thinking of maybe doing a southern Caribbean on the ship class right below Freedom class, but I can't get the flow-rider out of my head. The ice-skating, rock-wall climbing, and golf just seem way better than a water slidde with a 30+ minute wait. Don't say food is better, because I found the food to be amazing, and the Grandeur is a very old hip. Everyone I met was super nice, and the crew was amazing. The bartenders were the best. They remember what you order, and if they see you, they ask you if you want one. I was 11 at my last cruise, and couldn't cut the fat off my steak. My dad got up to do it, and the waiter jumped in and did it for me right there on the table. Is Carnival better? By the way, price isn't much of a problem.Royal Caribbean versus Carnival?
No Carnival is not better. I have cruised on both and found that carnival does not have nearly as many activities on their ship as rccl. Also while they do have a water slide. Royal caribbean offers a rock climbing wall, ice skating rink, in line skate track, basketball court, flow rider, golf course. I think they realize that not everyone wants to hang by the pool and ride down water slides. People want to actually do things. Carnival hasn't caught up to that yet. Also the food on royal caribbean was great. They always had a variety and whether you were in the buffet or dining room the food was hot, and flavorful. For me carnival was the opposite. The food in the buffet was so nasty, we made sure we went to the dining room for every meal. Also I found the shows and nightlife to be better. They have so many different lounges that no mater what your pleasure you're going to find something to enjoy. Also the crew are very helpful and friendly and its genuine. There have been a few times at the ports that crew members would approach us and hold a conversation. I love royal caribbean because they realize that people have different interests and they want to make sure everyone has an enjoyable time.Royal Caribbean versus Carnival?
Yes, Carnival is better. And dont worry, Im not just saying that because thats the only crusie I have been on, like other people. I have been on others, and Carnival has been the best for us. I just got back last week in fact of the Carnival Splendor out of LA for the Mexican Riviera... best cruise yet :)

    Royal Caribbean's Fuel teen club?

I'm going on a cruise for my 16th birthday over spring break with my best friend. We would definately go to the teen club! My mom likes a cruise on Liberty of the Seas, which has Fuel. I was wondering if it was fun, like are there dance parties every night, are they full, do people actually dance, etc. I just got off a Carnival cruise where the teen club was AMAZING. Also, RCCL has Fuel as ages 12-17. Do they 12 year olds constantly hang with you? Are the parties with them? Any info would be appreciated, thanks in advance.Royal Caribbean's Fuel teen club?
Last spring break I took my best friend on a Royal Caribbean cruise but we traveled on Oasis of the Seas. They did have Fuel there with parties and activities constantly going! on you first day, the room will have the Fuel daily schedule. It might be a little different on the ship your going on but the parties are usually separated but sometimes all is welcome. Enjoy your cruise :)
I've been on the brilliance of the seas! it was awesome! I was 14 and they wanted to put me in the 12-14 age group but none of us really listened to them. Not all the 12 year olds even go! but the ones who were there were kinda cool! don't worry about ages some are very mature!! have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Royal Caribbean's Fuel teen club?
There are fun activities everyday, and followed by a night club at night, it can be fun depending on the people on your cruise. but you are bound to meet so many people and make a little group! its going to be fun have a blast!:)
The teen clubs are open daily from breakfast to about 1 a.m at night / morning. but i recommend hanging with family all day and doing other stuff, and then just going to the teen club where all the fun happens at night. Im not sure what 'fuel' club means. but I just got off a royal caribbean ship explorer of the seas. it was LOTS of fun. i went to the teen club ( im 14 turning 15) so i was placed in the 12-14 group unforteunality -_- im mature for a 14 year old so i was upset because the group sucked. the people were really small and immature. not my thing. so my dad got my twin sister and i to switch to 15-17 group and it was AMAZING. the teen club allows people to dance every night. the 15-17 group is from like 12- 1:00 a.m because the curfew for people under 18 is 1:00 a.m ugh so dumb! but one night theyll let all the 15-17 year olds hang in the adult club its awesome ! depends on the largness of the ship, but theyre were SO many teens. way too crowded, but i met alot of people. It says 12-17 which i liked at first cause i wanna hang iwth older kids. but the groups are seperated at all times so no the annoying 12 year olds will hang by themselves, thank g0d, the parties are not with them! since the curfew is 1, sometimes me %26amp; the friends I made.. we took the elevator and went exploring.. we went to the top helicopter landing part of the ship where its windy and we;d watch the moon, and we'd sit at the cafe and have food or dip our feet into the hot tub at night, it was alot of fun!

  • How to start own cruise line?

Hi, I appreciate you for taking your time to answer me here.

I am a teenager currently taking a business course at high school. Ever since I went on RCCL's Explorer of the Seas a few months ago, I fell in love with the Cruise Industry and started thinking about starting my own big cruise line.

My plan is to become a police officer (They get paid a lot in my city, and always wanted to be a cop) and once I have a good enough income, start a small cruise tour business (hiring people of course) and hopefully build up the business as profits grow. I know that there is a lot of demand in this industry and that this business could become successful. I just need a real business plan.

    Also, would these work?

    - Developing a sales pitch on the TV show Dragon's Den once business has become stable

    - Mass Advertising

    - Writing up a well-developed CSR sheet

Any other ideas will be well appreciated and PLEASE, take my question seriously.

Once again, I thank you for your time.

PS, I don't want answers like, Go become a Crew Member because I can't stand to leave family and friends for months at a time thanksHow to start own cruise line?
No question; yours goals are way beyond your means, and the first thing you need to do is learn. The cruise business is really about money- HUGE amounts of money. The people who are capable of putting that together do not run the ships; they run the company... the ship is just a tool they use to produce a profitable product, the cruise experience.

Working in the industry could give you knowledge of the operations, but that would be just a start. If you wanted to own or be a major partner in a cruise line, the skills you need are different- like raising money, managing money, logistics, marketing and so on. That says getting an MBA would be a good start, but hardly a key to the door.

Royal Caribbean (RCL on the New York Stock Exchange) has an 8 billion dollar stock value and an enterprise value double that. Going into such a business would be comparable to starting a new automobile company. Possible, but you simply can't compete with the established industry on their terms. You would need a niche, meaning something different and special that made investors want to help you and customers want to buy your product. Think original- not copy-cat.How to start own cruise line?
you do need to spend time working on a cruise ship or you will have no idea how to run one.

Cruise tours are a good idea. You don't need to go to Europe or the caribbean. America has lot of little islands in Lakes and the beach coast to visit. Lots of interesting places along rivers too. You need to start small, that's the key. It's all about the experience on board. Try to be different, don't' copy the big ones.

Try a murder mystery cruise. A lets go look at the wildlife cruise. Maybe a dinner or overnight cruise. how about an arts and craft cruise. (Market your service to clubs and they can have themed 'retreats' on your ship.)

You're going to need a bigger boat.

Carnival - Grand Cayman Versus Royal Caribbean - Nassau?

Hi, am trying to book a cruise in december. I am a first time cruiser. My options have been broken down to two and I have a hard time making up my mind? 1st option 4 nights with Royal Caribbean going to Nassau and Coco Cay and 2nd option 5 nights with Carnival going to Grand Cayman and Cozumel...am confused. Am 22 and my boyfriend is 25 and we want to have fun but we dont want somewhere too too noisy and busy and crowded. The ships are Carnival Inspiration and RCCL Sovereign of The seas. And we are also kinda tight on budget plus Carnival is 100 bucks more! Any hidden expenses that we should be aware of?Carnival - Grand Cayman Versus Royal Caribbean - Nassau?
First of all....for this an the rest of your many questions that you may have, this is an EXCELLENT website.

    http://www.cruisecritic.com

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com

There are message boards (and they are really active boards) for both cruise companies and lots of knowledgeable ppl to be able to give you their opinions and experiences on both ships.

If you're a partier, Carnival is the party ship. Royal Caribbean has a good night life too but people are (or tend to be from my experience) more civilized on RC. I've heard that Carnival standards are below par so I would suggest RC.

CocoCay is GREAT....make sure you take the cereal boxes you can get in the Windjammer with you to the island. Take the cereal into the water and you will be surrounded by hundreds of fish - it is amazing! They have good scuba and snorkelling there. Plus since it's a private island, no one is heckling you. The bbq on the beach is fantastic. It was the best part of my Bahamas cruise 2 years ago.

Check out the websites above - they really are the best!

They can give you a lot of insider information about the best places to eat on board, secret places to check out, etc etc.

For hidden costs, check out and see if Carnival includes gratuities or not in their final price. RC does not, so plan on adding $7.50 per day or so for tips.
OK, it's a mixed bag. I've taken both the 3 night RCI to Nassau and Cococay on Sovereign of the Seas, and the 5 night Carnival to Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios, but I've also been to Cozumel.

Grand Cayman is definitely nicer and more interesting than Nassau, but it's also way more expensive.

Cococay is much better than Cozumel in my opinon - Cozumel has become way too crowded, tourisy and commercial for me in recent years. Cococay is a private island and does not have to cost an extra cent.

Of the two cruise lines, I like Royal Caribbean a lot more than Carnival, but I'm significantly older than you are. You may find Carnival more fun. My daughter who is your age likes Carnival a lot, my son who is your boyfriend's age prefers Royal Caribbean.

If you've never been to Nassau it can be fun - it's not as good as Grand Cayman, but there are things you can do for free, like walk around the historic parts of town, go to the beach, or visit the Cloister out on Paradise Island.

Also Sovereign of the Seas, though older, is actually a very neat ship - it's historic. Did you know that Sovereign of the Seas was the very first ship to ever have a multi story atrium? It was also the largest ship afloat when it was built, although that was 20 years ago.

All in all, if it were me, I would take the Royal Caribbean cruise.

By the way the $100 difference simply represents the extra day.

By the way hidden expenses are many on a cruise. Make sure you allow $10 per day per person for tips - they are expected, and these folks serving you make almost nothing. Any alcohol costs money, as do cokes. You can get water, coffee and iced tea all day for free in the buffet restaurant. Expresso drinks cost extra, bingo costs extra, they will try to get you to go to the casino, and they have spa services, and all kinds of things to buy. A cruise can be very cost effective IF you are very careful about these things.Carnival - Grand Cayman Versus Royal Caribbean - Nassau?
Good luck with booking a cruise in December this late; may be possible, if it's not holiday weeks.

Anyway, CruiseCritic is a great site.

I would do the Coz/Cayman cruise; Nassau is not that great, Cayman is nice [do the stingrays] and Coz has Chankanaab Park [just grab a cab and go] - check their website.

Never been on RC [many on CC say the food isn't so great]; been on Carnival three times, all were nice, though the food is not as good as it used to be.
Let me say you will get as many opinions as there are people on these boards. You need to find the best match for you regardless of what people say!

Most short cruises, regardless of the line, tend to attract a younger crowd and are more of a party atmoshpere. It is true that each line targets a certain market. Carnival is noted as being more of a party ship line, it does have a younger age market share but even at that, each line has more younger people cruising the caribbean and an older median age cruising say, Alaska and longer cruises for the obvious reasons; time and money.

Take a look at each of the ships. Do they offer amenities you would be interested in using or activities you would take part in? Have you looked at the excursions that go along with each cruise? Anything that catches your eye there??

Hidden costs: Little is hidden if you do your reseach. What is not included: personal purchases, services such as the spa service, excercise classes, excursions, gambling, alcohol, soda, if offered, specialty dining, tipping.

I personally do like Royal Caribbean over Carnival, however Nassau and Coco Cay would not be particularly high up on my list of places to go.

Though I am not a big Carnival fan, I do enjoy Cozumel - one of the best places to snorkel, dive or tour the ruins and if you've never done the Sting Ray City in the Grand Caymens, you're in for a treat! Grand Caymens is quite expesive but you don't have to shop there if you don't want to!

It all just depends on what you want out of your trip.
The two lines are very similar. The Sovereign of the Seas was built in 1988 and will be leaving Royal Caribbean around October 2008 (to be replaces by the Monarch of the Seas, which is a very similar ship, but built in 1991). The Carnival Inspiration was built in 1996. The cabins on the Inspiration are about 50% bigger than the cabins on the Sovereign. In addition, there is more room per passenger on the Inspiration than on the Sovereign. And if this matters to you, the Inspiration has a water slide while the Sovereign has a rock climbing wall.

As to cost, the five night cruise is going to cost more than the four night cruise. One advantage of the five night cruise is that the first and last days are at sea. Days at sea are very relaxing and it gives you a chance to unpack and pack. I have been on seven cruises, and one did not have the first day be a day at sea. I missed that opening day at sea and was very tired by the end of the first full day.

Coco Cay is Royal Caribbean's private island. I have not been to Coco Cay, but I have been to Royal Caribbean's private beach (Labadee). Several cruise lines have their own private island and these are great, relaxing beach days. The only people there are from your ship.

Nassau, Grand Cayman and Cozumel are all foreign islands. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. I have been to Grand Cayman twice (and will return again in 2008). I have been to Cozumel twice and Nassau once. I love swimming with the stingrays in Grand Cayman. Cozumel also has a lot to offer and I look forward to going there again. Unfortunately I went to Pearl Island when I went to Nassau. I highly recommend that you don't go to Pearl Island in Nassau. So the next time I go to Nassau (whenever that may be) I plan to explore the island.

Hidden expenses. All food and most drinks are included. Not included are the alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, bottled water (tap water is free, taste fine and is safe to drink on board the ships) and specialty coffees (like you would find at Seattle's Best). Tips are not included and are $10 per day per person. Photographs are $10 to $20 each, but you don't have to buy any. Shore excursions that you arrange through the ship are extra (and optional). Spa treatments are extra (and expensive). Anything you buy in the on board stores are extra. If you want to gamble in the casino, that is extra (though if you win, you do get to keep the money).

So, if you don't buy anything on board the ship, the only extra cost will be for the tips, which are $10 per day per person.

Turning 21 on Royal Caribbean Cruise?

We are going on a Cruise monday the 1st on RCCL Majesty of the Seas, My friend who is going turns 21 on Wednesday the 4th. I called royal caribbean and they said she will not be able to purchase drinks because the age you are when you set sail is the age you are on the whole cruise.... If she doesnt drink until Wednesday and has someone else buy her her drinks what could happen if they asked to see her seapass card to check her age? Technically she is 21. So what could happen to her? Fine? She looks like she is 21 so i dont think it will be an issue if her boyfriend buys her drinks for her but we were just wondering. Thanks for the helpTurning 21 on Royal Caribbean Cruise?
I would call back and ask someone else at the cruise line. Because if that is the case and someone buys her drinks, according to the cruise contract that you agreed to by purchasing the cruise itself, you give the cruise line permission to basically kick you off the ship with no refund or recourse if you are caught doing something illegal and that includes giving alcohol to minors.

Just double check and then play by the rules. If anything else have her drink when you are in port somewhere. The drinks are way cheaper there anyways.

    Have a nice time!!!
    Heyy

Dont listen to who ever said that to you, its bull

They said to me if you turn the legal age whilst sailing you have to go to this place on the cruise ship to change your details attached to your card so that your friend can drink!

Im turning 18 on the Freedom of the seas next week, the only thing that suck is im from the UK so i can already legally drink HERE! lmao but i cant when go to america lmao, which sucks

Have fun anyway xTurning 21 on Royal Caribbean Cruise?
Honestly, the cruise ship just wants to make money, i don't think they will care if her boyfriend buys her a drink AFTER she turns 21. Actually the drinking age of many of the islands you visit on a cruise have drinking ages of 18 or 19 anyways ! But def don't get drunk while on an island and don't get drunk on the ship. Some people have gotten drunk and fell overboard, it's easy to fall over because the barriers are not that secure !
Hey, Ive been on a Royal Caribbean Cruise (Explorer of the Seas) and it was AMAZING !

You think its all strict and tight but its not. Everyones dead relaxed and I dont think you need to worry about it all all. No-one will even notice !

Im telling you - you will LOVE it. When I went I really didnt want to leave so 2 years later we went back (we even went on the same ship!)

So honestly JUST ENJOY IT! I know you will though :D

    Hope this helps x x x x
they can't legally prevent her from drinking if she is of legal age. What you can do is go to the front desk on her birthday and they can do what ever it is they do (when i went they punched a hole in your room key) to make it known that you can drink.
just get someone else to buy her drinks, absolutely no one will know

    Enjoy!!!!!!!!
they can put her off at the next port of call.

    More Cruise Questions....?

If anyone has seen my other questions, you see I am hopeless at stuff like this. I found a different Bahama cruise. I was planning the '5 Day Exotic Eastern Caribbean' carnival cruise, but (even though it says 'Caribbean' it goes to the Bahamas), on 'Orbiz' I found a RCCL deal, 4 day and goes to 4 bahamian (is that a word) ports, too. The ships are: Carnival Destiny and Majesty of The Seas. WHich 1?More Cruise Questions....?
Do majesty of the seas.. She is one of the best out their! Great ship not crowded thousands of activities

carnival is way to dumpy!More Cruise Questions....?
The Bahamas is in the Caribbean and being that it is close nearly all 3-5 day cruises are going there (though a few do go to just St Thomas %26amp; St Martin's, or just to Cozumel and back)

Personally I would never do a 4 day 4 ports ship. That sounds terrible. Every single day you are at a dock. No days at sea to just enjoy the ship activities. I'm not a huge fan of the Bahamas and will never go to Freeport again. That was the worst port of call I've ever seen.

What is the itinerary of both ships? To me that's more important than the ship though I know a lot of people don't feel that way. I'm a fan of Carnival though the Destiny is my least favorite ship. So just based on the ship I'd say Majesty of the Seas. But like I said, the itinerary matters most to me.

    Ship bigger than the oasis?????

I just finished my cruise on the oasis and let me say that that ship was a city on a boat. it was very very huge. i just learned that royal carribbean had planned project sunshine and if you dont know it is going to be another one of the RCCL's luxurious cruise ships. but the royal carribbean is the type of company that loves to advance and innovate and every class of ship that they make are bigger than the ones before it. (other than the radiance class) but i dont think that the oasis class will be succeeded by a bigger boat. what do you think about this and if they do do you think it would be safe?Ship bigger than the oasis?????
The Project Sunshine ships are not expected to exceed the size of the Oasis-class ships: http://www.rclinvestor.com/phoenix.zhtml鈥?/a>

  • What is my best bet for using Skype overseas?

    Detail:

I am a US Citizen using Verizon Wireless w/ Droid X (have Skype Mobile) going on a cruise (RCCL) to Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Maarten.

I set-up my Verizon for Global Data (meaning I can use Skype while overseas).

Can I use my Skype Mobile to call US landlines and cellphones while I am overseas? Or is it only for calling other countries? I have never used Skype ever and do not understand how this works.

What is my best bet here? If I can use it to call home what is the best package for a one week cruise or do I not need one?

ThanksWhat is my best bet for using Skype overseas?
You need to add money to your skype account not sure what the rate will be just look on skype for that.

How much will data be per MB out side the country? It might be cheaper to just call people and stay off the data.

Im guessing it should say something different overseas but one question i dont believe you can use skype over 3g unless you did the little UK hack. I cant remember wher ei read that at, i think it was over at engadget.comWhat is my best bet for using Skype overseas?
yes, but i believe that they charge like 50 cents a minute

Important hints of things to pack on a cruise?

Hi! My boyfriend and I are cruising for the first time (yay!) 12/1/08. We are sailing on RCCL's Navigator of the Seas. I've been doing some research for helpful little hints of things to bring-- a travel iron, an electrical power strip, insulated cups to keep drinks cold, etc. Does anyone have any other advice or helpful hints they could pass along?? Maybe a hint that you think is something that people don't usually think about before embarking?? Thanks!!! :)Important hints of things to pack on a cruise?
One thing that I always stress is to bring appropriate footwear for the excursions you plan on taking. To many people try to wear flip flops on a 5 mile hike or something. You also can't wear flip flops for white water rafting and a lot of the adventure excursions. If you know the type of thing you are going to do, make sure you have the right shoes for it.

Also, I always bring a pair of long pants and a sweater/sweatshirt. People think they aren't going to get cold but I always get cold. The evenings can be chilly and sometimes the air conditioning in public areas is lower than I'm comfy with.

As far as the travel iron goes - double check with your cruise line to make sure it's allowed. I don't iron (too lazy) but on my first cruise a few years back, they weren't allowed. I've seen where one allows them but only in a special area of the ship where the electric systems are set up for them.

DON'T bring a garment bag. Cruise lines discourage it, but I've seen people do it. Think of how the airport people load luggage on a plane, and that's how they'll handle your garment bag. Quick and efficient without concern for whats inside.

Edit: Sorry for the over share, but as an experienced cruiser I always like to help prevent people from making similiar mistakes that I've made. Most of us here are sincere in our advice and willingness to be helpful. You may not need all the extra stuff we tell you, but you never know. We might mention something that you hadn't thought off.
In the many cruises I have taken on many ships and with various cruise lines, I have NEVER needed or wanted a power strip, a travel iron, or insulated cups! If your cabin does not have an iron and ironing board that is because it is unsafe to do there -- go to the on board laundry facility and use the irons provided there. Better yet, skip ironing! Your clothes will de-wrinkle themselves very nicely while hanging. As to a power strip, that is unnecessary since there are outlets available in your cabin in the bathroom, and you shouldn't leave heat-producing things plugged in all the time anyway. (Fire is the most serious hazard on board any ship.) As to keeping drinks cold, you can get as much ice as you will ever want from any bar on board. They're very nice about it, so don't hesitate to ask.

Now, as to what I always take that never seems to be on anybody's list -- a tote bag! I find it wonderful for days to keep my sunscreen, sunglasses, a book, key/ID card, bit of cash for the casino, and daily program together. Also, take some waterproof shoes such as flipflops or water shoes with you, since the decks can get really hot around the pool, and it's very helpful to have something on your feet that you can leave right on the edge of the pool while you're swimming. You won't want heels -- flats or sandals are much easier and more comfortable to wear in the evening. Tennis shoes for all the walking you'll do on board and on shore, of course. And -- a lot fewer clothes than you think you need!Important hints of things to pack on a cruise?
One thing if flying is to bring a snack. The ones on the plane are not very good for what they charge. As for the cruise comfortable shoes, sun glasses, common sense etc. Just do not doing anything that you would not do at home. Con grates on your first cruise, been on over 20 and the best travel going. A good camera is a plus, an international phone card if you need to call anyone will save you alot over a cell phone.

    ENJOY.
ERICA. think you have pretty much covered everything. I also know what it's like when you travel a lot, I usually get just as excited as you seem to be when planning a new trip. that to me is also part of the excitement of traveling it's so much fun to be doing something new. you'll have a wonderful time,
You will want to bring a battery powered travel alarm clock. If you are in the inside cabins with no windows, there is no way to tell if it's morning or not.

Bring some snacks but don't over do it. The line we sail on (Princess) has food of all sorts available 24-7.

A book and MP3 player are good to have.

One set of dress cloths for the formal dinner and the rest can be casual wear.

A phone card just in case. Tylenol.

    Have fun!
a plug that will switch from UK to USA or wherever you'll be
I have been on about 20 cruises, many with Royal Caribbean, and here's what I suggest based on my experiences:

Always pack your passport and cruise documents in your carry on bag ONLY.

The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM, so take:

    -swim wear (at least 2),

    -shorts, tank tops and "T's"

    -sandals,

    -beach shoes,

-your snorkel equipment if you have it,

    -sun glasses and sun screen,

    -lotions,

-a cap or big hat for the sun,

-a book if you are a reader,

    -your music player,

-sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym,

    -good walking shoes,

    -your camera, and

-other personal toiletries including tooth paste, mouth wash or lotions.

Your cabin will have towels and soap provided, including pool and beach towels, and a hair dryer. It will also have a generic hair shampoo so you do not need to bring that unless you like a specific brand.

Don't over pack , take clothes that you can mix and match tops and bottoms and plan to wear each piece twice. If you are going to the Caribbean you will likely be in shorts and/or swim wear most of every day so evening clothes don't usually get much wear.

Your cruise will have a formal night or two when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship鈥檚 Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. You will not be denied entry to the main dining room if you decide not to dress up, as long as you are at least sports casual. But most people do dress up. A gown or party dress for women and a suit or tux for men. Some people dress up both formal nights, some don't. We always take the formal stuff off after dinner and a photo or two and go back to casual stuff.

    - Its best to pack using soft-sided luggage because with space limited in your cabin it fits under the beds better if its not hard sided luggage.

    - Pack using the vacuum clothing bags (about $20 for 3 at Target) so that you can get more in your bag AND so that if the TSA at the airport opens your bag they can see what's inside without rummaging through your things.

-Take a small carry-on bag for the last night of the cruise. On the last evening you will be required to put your luggage outside your cabin by about 2:00 AM so that they can start taking it down to the lower deck for offloading the next morning. So you will need a small bag for your toiletries and your clothes that you sleep in.

    - If you can take a six-pack of bottled water and soft drinks in your carry-on for your cabin. You will have to pay for both on the ship and its nice to have those handy in the cabin.

    - If you are taking your cell phone, MP3 player or other item that needs to be plugged in take an extension cord as the plugs in the cabin are generally not in the best places and there are usually only one or two.

    - Take a small bottle of hand sanitizer and/or hand-wipes. There are generally sanitizer dispensers at the entrances of restaurants, the buffets and dining room, but some times the are not there or not working. The sanitizer helps prevent the spread of the Norwalk Virus that sometimes occur on cruise ships.

-If you plan to get into the pools or hot tub as soon as you get on ship (they will be open), bring those clothes in your carry on bag; you other luggage may not get to your cabin until much later in the afternoon.

    - Take a can of air freshener for your cabin bathroom. The bathrooms do not have great exhaust fans and the cabins are close.

    - Take a few zip lock bags of various sizes; they always come in handy.

    - Take some one dollar bills (also maybe a few $5's) for tipping the porters in the airport, at the pier (they do not work for the ship), and they will come in handy in port stops for buying small items in the markets and at vendor stands; especially bartering places.

    - Royal Caribbean ships don't have self service laundry and don't provide iron and boards; but they will press clothing for a fee (and its kinda expensive). If you do take an iron use it, cool it and put it away because if you leave it sitting out they WILL confiscate it (its listed as a prohibited item).

    - I have found it beneficial to take an insulated cup, preferably with a top, for hot and/or cold drinks. The cups and glasses provided on ship area OK but kinda small.

Do December cruises w/Royal Caribbean have Christmas music and decor everywhere?

I have reserved a cruise to the Caribbean for the first week of December on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas. I would like to know from anyone who's cruised with RCCL at that time: are there going to be Christmas decorations and music all over the ship? Because, to be honest, I was really looking forward to escaping all that junk. I realize that for cruises during the *last* week of December, one could expect these things, but what about Dec 4-10? Should I push the cruise back to January to avoid this? Thank you!Do December cruises w/Royal Caribbean have Christmas music and decor everywhere?
I have cruised on RC a couple times in December and they had just a minimal amount of decorations up. They had a big tree in the promenade mall on the Liberty and in the Windjammer cafe they had gingerbread houses decorated for Christmas. But there was not Christmas music playing at all and the dinner menu didn't have any Christmas stuff on it either. The other decorations scattered about were so inconspicuous that you hardly noticed it.
Ahh on a cruise for christmas, I'm jealous

Do December cruises w/Royal Caribbean have Christmas music and decor everywhere?
Cruise lines do little things during holidays, but it is usually minimal.

You may see some decorations around the ship and at dinner and buffets, but it won't be much.
I was on a Royal Caribbean ship last year, from Nov 30th to Dec. 11th. There were minimal decorations, hardly noticeable. They did have a lovely gingerbread house in the Windjammer Room (buffet).
No, there won't be much of that - if any at all. I went on a Halloween cruise and there were no decorations up anywhere.

I lost my jacket in a Seattle cab.?

we just got off a cruise ship friday 6/5/2009(RCCL) and took a yellow cab from pier to amtrak depot. I left my jacket in the cab floor-boards, with my camera in the pocket. When we got home I called lost and found, but the guy kinda brushed me off, Any way to get it back? my name and address are on the cup in the other pocket, What are the odds of a return?I lost my jacket in a Seattle cab.?
Call lost and found again, let them know the date and locations of the ride and try to find your driver, if the driver found it they should have turned it in. The next customer might have taken it so you have less than a 50/50 chance of return.

    Carnival or Celebrity?

So I'm planning a cruise with my boyfriend. We're both in our twenties, we aren't power drinkers but like to drink, we like to travel around and see new things, etc. We're doing it more for the excitement of being on a cruise, go on adventures, etc.

Anyway. I'm stuck between Carnival and Celebrity. RCCL, which I've been on in the past, won't really work in terms of time, and Carnival and Celebrity are the ones in my budget.

So... in your opinion, from what I've told you, do you think Celebrity is too "posh" for people like us, and not what we're looking for? Or do you think Carnival is too cheap/children infested?

Opinions and other advice is welcome :)Carnival or Celebrity?
Well they are very different and it's odd they are both in your budget.

Carnival I have done several times. I greatly enjoyed it in my 20s. It's full of young people in your age range. It has great alcohol specials and lots of "games" like belly flop contests and crazy things like that.

Celebrity is very different. It's older, more subdued, and more elegant. It's got more high end food and more high end liquor.

Is it too posh for "people like you"? I don't really know. It's definitely higher end. When you walk into a high end hotel do you feel lap of luxury or do you feel like a kid worried about breaking something? When you buy a bottle of wine for dinner are you going to be upset that no bottles on Celebrity are less than $50? I know my husband and I love that Carnival has so many that are under $30 which is our price point.

When are you going? If you were going in the summer, I would probably be less likely to lean towards Carnival as they are children infested. You don't have to worry about it as much during the school year though.

Have you done several cruises or is this your second? If you've done several maybe you are ready to move up to a more expensive cruise line.

Read reviews on cruise critic to really get a feel for it. It's hard to say which would suit you better not knowing you but my husband and I feel Royal is more like Carnival. We would like to eventually do a Princess or Celebrity but we both feel like once you do that you won't go back to Carnival or Royal--right now we'd rather do more cheaper cruises than fewer higher end cruises.
Too bad RCCL doesn't work out because out of the 3 we've been on they have the best entertainment and over all feel. I haven't been on Celebrity but I can say that the activities for mid-20's were lacking. They didn't have much to do throughout the day if you didn't want to drink or sit by the pool. Hope this helps!Carnival or Celebrity?
carnival ihs betta cuz dey lik 2 party alot n dah pepl n workerz r fun 2 tlk to buht ihf yuh wnt mur luxry, room n privacy ii dink celebrity wud b ah beta choice
Carnival is fun and cheap. I just got off a Carnival Cruise. There will be less kids if you go when school is in session. Don't go during the summer or during holidays and you won't have to worry about the kids.

We had great fun on our excusions and the ship was clean and nice. We went on the Carnival Pride for 8 days and the price couldnt be beat!
1- Carnival for a younger, fun crowd. Lower price

2- Celebrity for an older, quiet crowd with less kids. Higher price
Carnival would be my vote. As previous posters have stated, if you're not traveling during the summer months/school holidays, there shouldn't be too many kids on the ship. On my first Carnival cruise, which was during the month of February, I saw practically no kids. It almost felt like a strictly adult cruise. However, during my summer cruise (August) it was very common to see children of various ages running around the atrium.

Celebrity is more classy and upscale. It will probably give you more of that "luxurious" feeling. But Carnival will be slightly more affordable with on-board expenses (alcohol, etc), as well as a focus on activities tailored for the younger crowd. This is important for me since one of my main objectives during a cruise is to meet other people my age who want to party. I crave a lively environment where people can socialize, make friends, and really enjoy their vacation.

The drink specials are reasonably priced, so you'll be able to do your drinking/partying and not waste too much money. This will give you more money to use at your port of call.

Both cruise lines will offer you an excellent experience. But for someone who is in their 20's, budget-minded, and wanting to party... Carnival seems to fit the bill the best.

Hope you enjoy whichever you pick!

  • Looking for best Alaskan cruise for family with 3 kids, 13, 13 and 10. Which line would you recommend?

We want a summer cruise through gulf, either direction. Want to see a glacier or two up close, and some Alaskan towns.

Have a 10 year old social butterfly girl, needs people to interact with. Also 13 year old twin boys into video games and swimming pools. They don't need social and probably would avoid it as they are each other's best friends. Maybe some cute girls.

Wife and I want good food, casual atmosphere, not party animals. Nice stateroom. Probably oceanview.

    Priorities are

    1. itinerary (Anchorage - Seattle/Vancouver either way)

    2. appropriate for pre and early teens

    3. glacier views, wildlife and scenery, towns to see

    4. comfort, food, exercise, pools etc

Appear to have choice of Carnival Spirit

    Celebrity Millennium

    HAL Veendam, Volendam, Zaandam

and Princess Island, Coral, Diamond and Sapphire

RCCL no open cabins for us in this timeLooking for best Alaskan cruise for family with 3 kids, 13, 13 and 10. Which line would you recommend?
I have cruised on Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean and I think that Princess or Royal Caribbean would provide the best cruise for you. There are some differences among the cruise lines. Princess, Celebrity and Holland America have great ships and have more reserved passengers. Holland America has more senior citizens cruising on its ships. Carnival has more first time cruiser and young people who want to party, party, party. Royal Caribbean caters most to families and has the most and best on ship activities. All of the cruise lines do have kids programs and places where they can hang out. The kids' programs and facilities do vary by ship.

We cruised to Alaska on a Princess ship a few years ago and that ship and cruise was great. The ship we were on, the Star Princess, was lovely. It, like most ships going to Alaska, has a solarium; a glass covered and enclosed pool and hot tub area so you can enjoy those without being out in the cold.

All ships these days have a gymnasium and a walking/jogging track. Some are better than others. The newer ships tend to have more and better amenities so look at the initial launch date as you choose.

As I said I recommend Royal Caribbean and that's because they generally have the most on board activities for kids and everyone else; they cater to families. My favorite of their ships, the Radiance of the Seas, does do Alaska cruises and I recommend that ship.

Regardless of which cruise line you take you will see beautiful scenery and glaciers. The ports stops and towns you see there will be a little different per cruise. But the best way to really see wildlife is to take a cruise-tour. That's a cruises that is preceded or followed by a land tour to other cities away from the ocean like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Talkeetna, Denali National Park and some other places like Kodiak and Whittier. The cruise tours are your best bet to see wildlife, especially if you elect to spend at least one night in the Denali National Park area. When we did the cruise-tour we saw moose, caribou, wolf, fox, and eagles. Plus the train ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks was fantastic (you can do that either way also).

Three of the cruise lines that you mentioned do the cruise tour using the train, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, and Princess. RCCL and Princess have special domed train cars for the tour.

I suggest that you look at and consider the cruise tour. One final note. The Alaska cruise season is mid-May through mid-September only. So your options for dates are closing quickly as the season is almost here for this year. The prices will now not be as good as if you had booked 6 months ago and you will likely now get the best prices for a September cruise. Prices are typically lower in May and September.
Have you check Norwegian ? I have been on the Island Princess. All cruise lines stop at just about the same ports. The Island Princess will take you within a 1/2 mile of the glaciers. Seems alot closer and as the ship enters it will turn slowly so you get many great views. They have an exercise room, you will see plenty of wildlife from the deck plus. if you try the buffet go all the way to back as it is all windows with a door on each side for taking pictures. They also have speciality rest. Food is good.

Plenty of excursions in Ketchikan, Juneua and Skagway. There is plenty for the family and the children to do. A great cruise.

If you have not already booked your cruise and have the time your whole family would really love Princess cruisetour. Much more wildlife, Alaska, Denali National Park %26amp; Fairbanks where you cruise on a real paddle wheel boat. Which ever you decide on a great cruise.

Enjoy.Looking for best Alaskan cruise for family with 3 kids, 13, 13 and 10. Which line would you recommend?
I think that Princess and Holland America do Alaska the best. Given that you have kids, I'd definitely choose Princess.
With the age of your kids I would consider Carnival.

Won't be too many party animals on an Alaskan cruise...

    Good Luck!
Carnival tends to offer the best benefits for the kids.

Spirit would be a great choice and is most likely your best value.
I went to Alaska on a Princess cruise/tour. It was everything you want and more. They have special things for kids to do and a place just for them. We went to Glacier bay and saw the glaciers crack and fall into the bay. We started in Fairbanks and did 4 days touring the land first. That was where we saw most of the wildlife, bears, eagles, moose, etc. When then went to Anchorage by train, then to Seward, the port. We had several stops along the way on the cruise. One tour we took that was the best was the White pass railroad. Kids would Love that tour. Such scenery like you have never seen. The food on Princess is always very good. They have a buffet that has food 24 hours a day. If you do not want to do the formal thing, fine, just eat in the buffet court. No problem. Myself, I liked the dinning room a lot because you are waited on, but the buffet is the same food. Go to Princess.com and check out the itinerary's there. I have been on 8 Princess cruises because I like them so very much.
    hello,

if you want read something about cruise ship

i just come accross this blog which may help you :-

OMG! i was planning a cruise on feb 14 from miami too!

well anyway i had cruised with royal before. i went on majesty of the seas to the bahamas and it was amazing. the majesty is also a very old ship.

i would go on royal caribbean for sure. They have better ships than Carnival. if you want to go on carnvial, you could go on carnival dream. its a newest ship thats gonna be launching late this year.

for me, i'm trying to go on old ships first and then working my way up to the better ships so i get wowed every time.

    hoped i helped =D
The Royal Caribbean line is definitely a step up from Carnival. I am an older person, but had a ton of fun on the flow rider. Never had to wait long either.I was on the Liberty and it was truly fantastic. I tried one of the Atrium cabins which was a great choice. You can watch the parade and shows without being in the middle of a mob.Royal Caribbean versus Carnival?
I would go with Royal Caribbean over Carnival every time. It's a different class altogether, although on my last cruise, an American at our table preferred Carnival as the best cruise line ever.

It's just a matter of personal opinion, but if RCCL have the features that you prefer, that's the one to go for.
I was at Carnival Victory like 3 weeks ago and it was amazing the people were very friendly all the time and the food was good!

I have only go to Royal Caribbean when i was little so i dont really remember..
No carnival is not better. I've cruised with both and carnival doesn't even compare to the service and amenities that royal caribbean offers.
ROYAL CARRIBEAN IS AMAZING. end of story =]
It all depends on the persons opinion. As you can tell, some of these people have only sailed with Royal Caribbean so of course they will say it is better. Also, I have been on many with each line. My choice, once again my opinion, is Carnival is much better. Lots say its a party ship for college kids..I hardly saw any college kids on my cruises, and it is very good for any age. I just got off the new Carnival Splendor and it was the best cruise of my entire life. So it is up to you, but remember, that these are only peoples opinions....
In my opinion Carnival would be a step down and you would enjoy the Liberty more than any Carnival ship. I have sailed on a RC Freedom Class ship (the Freedom of the Seas) and will be going on the Liberty later this year because I enjoyed the Freedom. Its a huge ship but it does not seem crowded at all. I would see people 4 or 5 days into the cruise that I had never seen before on the ship. It was fantastic!!

I have done 8 RC cruises and its my favorite cruise line.
