Have you cruised on the Liberty of the Seas?

I am leaving for my first cruise in 11 days (not that I am counting...) on the Liberty of the Seas with RCCL. Has anyone been on this ship before? It looks like there is so much to do, that I don't want to waste time on things that aren't fun. What was your favorite think to do on the ship?



Any pointers on what to pack for the formal dinner. I would rather be overdressed than underdressed. Thanks!Have you cruised on the Liberty of the Seas?
I have not been on the Liberty but I have been on its twin sister ship the Freedom. We went on the Freedom last November. It was a great cruise. This is what I have written in the past about that cruise.



The ship holds over 3,000 passengers but we completed boarding in about 30 minutes from the curb to our cabin. It would have gone faster if they had been ready at a couple spots. We were slowed mainly by one person looking at all of the "Set Sail" passes as we entered the terminal. Then they were slow in setting up a second security desk to take security photos for the cruise cards. After that it was a breeze.



I loved the balcony cabin we had. It was roomy and had plenty of space for clothes; bags go under the bed. They announced to us that the beds on the Freedom will be cruise line wide; its was a great pillowtop bed and was very comfortable in comparison to beds on other ships. There was a flat panel HDTV in the room, a safe, and a shower stall with a sliding door. Our room included a love seat and coffee table.



The ship has a mall area down its middle with shops on both sides, including a barber shop, coffee shop, and a place where you can get free food 24/7. That's in addition to the 24/7 free room service. Its like a larger version of RC's Mariner and Adventure of the Seas ships.



The ship has some features that other ships don't have. The rock climbing wall is on many RC ships. But the new "flow rider" is unique to RC's Freedom and Liberty of the Seas ships. It is a place where you can go surfing on a boogie board right on the back of the ship. It works great, although I didn't try it. There is stadium seating for people to watch or sit while awaiting their turn. The ship also has an ice skating rink and during the week there are two days when there is a free ice show that is great, kinda like the Ice Capades. The ship also has a full sized basketball court and mini-golf. I cannot remember if it also had the roller blade track but it certainly has the ice skating.



This ship is great for kids and families with kids. On the pool deck there is one area called the H2O Zone which is essentially a small water park for kids; but us big kids can play there too. It has water cannons, a small lazy river, a pool, and falling water all over. Kids will love it. Then the middle of the ship has another pool where everyone can get wet or use a hot tub. Then up further there is an adults only area called the Solarium with a pool and two hot tubs that extend over the sides of the ship. These tubs are huge, can hold maybe 12 people and you can look over the side of the tub at the ocean.



The ship has THE best gymnasium I have ever seen on a cruise ship. All of the latest equipment, including weight machines, rowers, steppers, treadmills and each has its own TV screen so you can watch TV while you workout. It also has a boxing ring and some other new high tech stuff. Also has steam room and sauna for those who use the gym.



In addition to the ice shows there was a show in the main show room each night. There is a casino and there are bars and lounges all over the ship. There is an internet cafe but I would ship it as it way too expensive and just wait until you get to Cozumel and there is an internet cafe right at the pier that is only $5. for an hour (vs $50 an hour on ship).



The only thing I did not like about the ship was its Windjammer Cafe where everyone goes for breakfast and lunch if they don't go to the main dining room, is too small for everyone and people were walking around looking for a table after they got their food. We decided to just order the free breakfast room service an eat on the balcony.



The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM. So take swim wear, shorts, sandals, beach shoes, your snorkel equipment if you have it, sun glasses and sun screen, lotions, a cap or big hat for the sun, a book if you are a reader, your music player, sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym, your camera, and other personal toiletries.



After 6:00 PM they request that you wear "sports casual" attire. That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, shirt with a collar, slacks, skirt, blouse, etc. You can still wear shorts and swim wear in the pools and spas but not in public areas like dining rooms and restaurants, show rooms, bars, casino, etc.



Most 7-day cruises have two formal nights when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship鈥檚 Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. But most people do dress up in a tux for men and a long dress (any color) for women. Some men just wear a suit and tie and some women wear a nice dress but not a gown. You will not be denied access to the dining room or anything else if you choose not to dress up. (we usually take off the formal stuff after dinner and pictures anyway).



Some other tips:





-Join the cruise club so that the cruise line will send you their specials and so that you can get discounts on future cruises with them. The discount will typically be $50 to $100 per person. If you will be celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, or birthday during the cruise, be sure to tell them, they will do special stuff for that.





- Its best to pack using soft-sided luggage because with space limited in your cabin it fits under the beds better if its not hard sided luggage. Take a small carry-on bag for the last night of the cruise. On the last evening you will be required to put your luggage outside your cabin by about 2:00 AM so that they can start taking it down to the lower deck for offloading the next morning. So you will need a small bag for your toiletries and and your clothes that you sleep in.



- - Cruise lines charge a lot for the photos they take so take your own photos around the ship when you get the chance, especially on the formal nights. Ask other passengers to take photos for you, they generally are very willing.





-

- Take a 6-pack of water and/or soft drinks in your carry on for your cabin.



- take a cup or mug with a lid for cold drinks when you are around the pool, most plastic glasses on cruise ships are small.



- take a small bottle of hand sanitizer. There will be a big dispenser at the entrance of most eating places, but sometimes these do not work or are empty. The sanitizer will help prevent you from getting sick from the Norwalk virus (unclean surfaces spread it).
Not many of us have been on that ship. That ship is fairly new, one of the biggest in the world. It can hold over 5,000 passengers. Go to the Royal Caribbean web site and take a tour of the ship. Plenty of good information for you. I would highly recommend that you pick your side trips before you get on your cruise. The side trips are things that you can do when you are in port. If you wait when you get on the ship, you will wait in long lines and may not be able to go. Also, you may want to know on how money is handle and proper tipping plus paying your final bill at the end of your cruise. Do you have an US passport? If not, apply now. The US State Department is backup beyond their eyeballs in paper work.Have you cruised on the Liberty of the Seas?

You are going to have a great time. I went on the sister ship Freedom of the Sea's. Here is my big tip! Bring a yellow highlighter for the "what's going on" list you will receive each day. Next bring a very small clock for the bathroom. A clip on sports watch I find handy to clip on pants belt loop. Walke talkie's are handy for large crowds. Cell phones will work but BEWARE it will probably cost you big from your carrier not the ship. If you plan on using call your carrier. They have fabulous little sandwiches and pizza in a little cafe in the mall area and it's open 24 hours.
I cruised on it last year.



Very nice ship, biggest ship ever so far. Ice skating is very cool minature golf and the promade mall is very nice. Rock wall and flow rider takes a very long time since it's not open all the time and when it is theres a long line. Food is ok, shore excursions are very cool. and entertainment is good.



Favorite thing is the ice skating and spa. You can use the facilities without getting a treatment. Definately do that. Two formal nights(evening gown and Suit) and 3 casual and 2 semi casual nights.
