Alcohol carding at fancy restaurants?

I wanted to take my boyfriend to Topolobampo in Chicago for his 21st birthday. This is a very upscale restaurant (2 weeks in advance reservations, top 10 Wine List, etc). However, we would have to go before his 21st birthday (and I'm not 21 anytime soon).

Of course we would like a bottle of champagne to accompany our dinner. I know they don't usually card at restaurants that are not chains, but the chef of Topolobampo owns a few places.

If we're prepared to be spending around $150 for dinner, do you think this is going to be a problem?

You have the policy wrong. The chains will have a corporate policy to card you if you look like you are near the legal age. The smaller, independents sometimes will be a little lax but it isn't that often.

If your bf looks under 21, they will card him. One thing that may get you through is if you "look" over 21, they might not bother. But if you also look under 21, your chances are not good.

Bear in mind that you order the wine at the beginning of the meal and they have no idea of how much you are going to spend, as if it was going to matter. The thing to keep in mind is that their alcohol license is more valuable to them than selling a bottle of wine so I'm afraid that you either need to wait or instead order a big time dessert. Final note on desserts, in almost all states, you can order a dessert that has alcohol in it.
They will card you and you won't be able to have any champagne, he can. Sorry but it is a big liability, if the server serves you and you are underage, she/he is the one in BIG trouble if caught, not you so much. I'm a server and I card everybody, it's not worth it to get in trouble no matter how much the customer is willing to spend.Alcohol carding at fancy restaurants?
Even upscale restaurants have to obey the law. They would not want to lose their liquor license because of 1 infraction.
most likely yeah, just seem and act older then him and make it seem that you know the wine like you have done it before, like white wine goes with every dish but not with a red meat then you use a red wine.... etc.um also make it a big deal that its his birthday.

I'm 18 plus im a guy(so i cant hit on every bar Tender) so if i can get any drink i want at a bar with out them carding me so can you, you just need to know how to pay it off.
