My wife and I are teachers in central Texas. Every summer we make a trek to a different place in the country for vacation and to expose our kids to more what the USA has to offer. We go about 300 miles between stops. We have a 34' 5th wheel trailer we pull.
We typically do all the tourist stuff when we travel, major museums, arenas, parks. etc. However I dislike tourist trap restaurants.
We're open for just about everything, but I'm a sucker for good pizza. We'll be there a week or so before moving on to the east and unfortunately my wife will not let me eat pizza everyday. So anyone have some suggestions for places NOT to miss when eating out?
thanks,
MichaelWe're headed to Chicago this summer with our kiddos non-tourist places to eat.?
Chicago has to be famous for their pizzas places, and you must at least check out one the restuarants while you are here. I can give you the websites for them, and you can look fro locations, and go to Mapquest.com , and you can print directions. I am not sure about any tourist trap restaurants.

There are at times, when I do dine at othr places besides pizza, but that is almost where I go for. But I hope that you enjoy your trip, and there is section, where you can find the locations for all expect for the last, that has it on their home page.
Dave's Italian in Evanston - it always has a long line but the place is big so the wait is never more than 20 minutes or so. They have both pizza and dinner. Busy family style restaurant.
-Spinach Ricotta Cheese pie
-the best 1000 island dressing and freshest salad you will ever have
-the pizza is classic thin crust Chicago styleWe're headed to Chicago this summer with our kiddos non-tourist places to eat.?

the bagel has great kosher foods, which I don't think you can get much anywhere else. Lots of variety but you have to be up for trying new things - see locations here : http://www.bagelrestaurant.com/
lou malnati's is your pizza place: http://www.loumalnatis.com/Locations/
none of those are fancy, but they are fun local spots :)
Chicago has a reputation for its pizza. It's a deep-dish variety - very filling. It's an acquired taste, especially if you have been exposed to really good pizza in other places.
But Chicago does have a reputation for good food. Beef is a big deal in Chicago - there are a number of good steak houses. None are very cheap.
Chicago's Chinatown has some very good places. Also the Swedish Andersonville neighborhood has some fabulous 'smorrebord' restaurants.
Superdawg is great, but might be a trek if you are staying downtown. For pizza try D'agostino's. If you do find yourself in the Evanston area (like for a nice cruise of the north shore) don't miss Pita Inn on Dempster Ave. Cheap, reliable, and tasty middle eastern joint.
Chicago is famous for its Pizza and Dawgz,, whatever you do if you go to one of the above mentioned hot dog placed .. do not put ketchup on it!!!!!
Pizzeara Uno is a great place on Rush street..
note downtown Chicago is not the place for a Fifth Wheel ..
Pizzeria Uno is really great place to go in Chicago. My wife %26amp; I make the commute to Chicago from Indianapolis nearly every summer to spend the day on Navy Pier, although you will probably have a hard time finding a place to park that thirty-four footer any where downtown.
Check out the Chicago Reader. They have an entire list of restuarants.

A fancy meal at the Signature Room at the 95th is a must stop. I'd also suggest Superdawg or Jean %26amp; Judes. Don't ask for ketchup on a hot dog. Mr. Beef on Orleans for an Italian beef sandwich. Thinking about the beef sandwich makes me hungry. It is the best Chicago food in my opinion. For a great Polish sausage, Jim's Maxwell Street Polish. It is my second favorite Chicago food.

Pizza, yes as everyone has mentioned. If you do pizza do Uno's. Outside of the museums you will see hot dog stands. Good place to grab a quick bite.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Ed Debevic's. A little off the main loop, but we walked there. It is a relatively small restaurant, kind of like a old 50's diner. the wait staff are a hoot. fun times. There gimmick is that they are a little insulting- but in a G-rated way. Our waitress came by with our drinks and we asked for straws, she came back and past by us and threw about 20 straws on our table. We were there for my daughter's 15 birthday, she and her friends loved it.
Portilllos and V%26amp;V's Pizza in Bartlett and Chicago Style in Niles (if it is still there)

It's on the south side, not touristy, and food is incredible.
You can also purchase authentic European food/beverages at the attached store - this is not like a Cracker Barrel, but an actual grocery store.
